What Our Customers Say
Where to find Irish Sea Moss seaweed powder
Atlantic Irish Sea Moss, scientifically called Chondrus crispus, is a red algae harvested at the inter-tidal zones. Mostly found in the North Atlantic. We have a deep tradition with using this seaweed and goes back many generations. Wild harvested Irish moss is very popular on the Aran Islands. It has been used in our kitchens for hot drinks and for medicinal healing purposes. Do not mix Sea moss from Irish Sea Moss, they are different seaweeds as Chondrus crispus only grows in cold waters of the north Atlantic.
Why is Irish Sea Moss powder good for you?
Irish sea moss is packed full of good nutrients and has always been a popular superfood alongside the likes of land vegetables such as kale and blueberries. It has high levels of potassium that helps keep your heart in good shape, it contains zinc that aids to keep a healthy immune system and even our digestive system too. It a good source for minerals such as B-complex vitamins and contains natural iodine. Reports suggest that iodine deficiency in the western world is a growing concern.
What does it taste like and how do I use Irish moss in my kitchen?
Irish sea moss has a strong salty taste from the ocean. To minimise or disguise the salty taste, the power can be added to smoothies, soups and potatoes for example. Used in Ireland for centuries in hot drinks to help unblock a chesty cough and to fight the common cold. Commercially, Irish moss has been used to thicken food such as chocolate, yoghurts and even in ice creams.

Irish Sea Moss Harvested from Ireland’s Coast - Pure, Natural, and Nutrient-Rich
The west coast of Ireland is widely regarded as a gold standard for edible seaweeds due to a combination of environmental protections, geographic advantages, and strict regulations that help ensure the purity, sustainability, and nutritional value of seaweed harvested there. Here are the main protections and factors contributing to this reputation:
1. Clean Waters Protected by EU and National Regulations
- EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) - This ensures high water quality standards across member states. Ireland’s west coast benefits from strong enforcement of this directive, with many of its coastal waters classified as "high" or "good" ecological status.
- Blue Flag Beaches and Waters – Many west coast areas meet the strict criteria for water cleanliness, safety, and environmental management.
- Low Industrial Activity - The west coast is relatively unindustrialized, reducing pollution and agricultural runoff compared to more urbanized areas.
2. Wild Harvesting Under Government Oversight
- Sustainable Harvesting Guidelines - The Irish Sea Fisheries Board (BIM) and the Marine Institute promote sustainable, non-destructive hand-harvesting methods.
- Licensing and Permits – Harvesting seaweed in Ireland often requires permits, especially in regulated zones, which helps manage pressure on natural populations.
- Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) - Some parts of the west coast fall under MPAs or SACs (Special Areas of Conservation under the EU Habitats Directive), which provide legal protections for marine biodiversity.
3. Pristine Marine Ecosystem
- Atlantic Exposure - The west coast is directly exposed to the open Atlantic Ocean, ensuring constant water movement and oxygenation, which prevents stagnation and supports biodiversity.
- Low Population Density – Rural communities and small towns dominate the region, meaning less urban wastewater and industrial discharge into the marine environment.
- Rocky Shoreline Habitat - The rugged, rocky coastline provides ideal growing conditions for diverse seaweed species, offering natural anchor points, tidal flow, and nutrient exchange essential for healthy, thriving Atlantic dulse sea vegetables.
4. Rich Biodiversity and Nutrient Content
- The nutrient-rich waters of the Atlantic - Having nutrient rich waters combined with low pollution, create ideal conditions for top quality, uncontaminated seaweeds like dulse, sea lettuce, carrageen Irish moss, and kelp.
- Thriving Marine Life – A wide variety of marine species coexist with seaweed beds, creating a balanced ecosystem that naturally supports seaweed growth and regeneration without the need for artificial inputs.
- Seasonal Variation Enhances Quality - Distinct seasonal changes along Ireland’s west coast contribute to varied nutrient uptake in seaweed, resulting in richer flavour profiles and higher concentrations of beneficial minerals in dulse flakes.
5. Recognition and Certification
- Organic Certification* - Many Irish seaweed producers obtain organic certification, which includes environmental and sustainability standards.
- Wild Atlantic Way Branding – Seaweed from this region is often associated with the Wild Atlantic Way, reinforcing its origin in one of Europe’s last truly wild and unspoiled coastal areas.
- Trusted by Health-Conscious Consumers - Dulse Flakes from Ireland are increasingly sought after in global markets, including Australia for their traceable origins, clean label, and alignment with certified organic and sustainable standards.
- Backed by Scientific and Culinary Interest - Irish Dulse Flakes has gained recognition among nutritionists and chefs alike for its natural umami flavour and dense mineral profile, leading to its inclusion in high-end health foods and gourmet applications.
